80 x 40 cm is the middle of our panoramic range and the one that suits a mantelpiece better than any other size we make. Wide enough to read as a proper panorama from across the room, short enough that it does not crowd a chimney breast or reach into the corners of an alcove.
Above a fireplace, where the mantel gives you width but the mirror or chimney breast limits the height. Over a 120 cm sideboard. Along a landing wall. Anywhere a normal canvas would look stubby against a long horizontal line of furniture.
City skylines, a stretch of coast, rows of terraced houses, a wide shot of a wedding party, mountain ranges. What matters is that something interesting runs the full width - a panorama with an empty middle looks like two photographs that have not been introduced.
Around 3780 x 1890 px, about 7.1 megapixels. Cropping a standard 4:3 photo down to 2:1 discards half its height, so a 12 MP original lands close to 6 MP - which is why a genuine panorama file usually prints better here than a cropped ordinary photo.
Printed with solvent-free HP Latex inks on fine-grained canvas, then hand-stretched over pine. Narrow formats need even tension more than square ones do, because any slackness shows as a shadow along the long edge.
| Compared with | How it differs |
|---|---|
| 60x30 | About 56% of the area with the same 2:1 crop. The smaller panorama. |
| 100x50 | Around 1.6 times the area, still 2:1. The step up for a wider chimney breast. |
| 80x60 | Same width, 20 cm taller, 4:3. Choose 80x40 for panoramas and 80x60 for phone photos. |
