Most large canvases are 3:2, which means a phone photo has to lose its top and bottom to fit. The 80 x 60 cm format is 4:3 - the shape your phone actually shoots in - so a picture taken on the way home from work goes onto three quarters of a metre of wall without a single pixel being thrown away.
Above a two-seater sofa or a 120 cm sideboard, which is where the two-thirds rule puts it. In a dining room on the wall opposite the window. Also a sensible choice for a bedroom where a 120 cm canvas would overhang the bed and start to feel top-heavy.
The bigger the canvas, the more a crop costs you. Taking a 4:3 phone photo down to 3:2 removes about a ninth of the image - barely noticeable at 30 x 20 cm, very noticeable at 80 cm when it is somebody’s forehead. If your library is mostly phone photos, this format and 40 x 30 cm are the two that leave them intact.
Roughly 3780 x 2835 px, about 10.7 megapixels. A current phone shooting at full resolution clears this. Photos sent to you over WhatsApp usually will not, because they are compressed on the way - ask for the original file if the picture matters.
At 80 cm across, frame quality decides whether the canvas still looks right in five years. Ours is reinforced solid pine, hand-stretched for even tension, printed with solvent-free HP Latex inks that do not fade back the way cheaper dye inks do in a bright room.
| Compared with | How it differs |
|---|---|
| 60x40 | Around 55% of the area and 3:2 rather than 4:3. Better for camera files, worse for phone files. |
| 90x60 | Same height, 10 cm wider, and 3:2. Choose 80x60 for phone photos and 90x60 for camera photos. |
| 100x75 | About 1.6 times the area, same 4:3 shape. The step up if the wall is over 150 cm wide. |

100x75 is the largest 4:3 format we print; 80x60 is the largest under a metre wide. Both take a standard 4:3 phone photo whole.
