Which Square Canvas Size Do You Need?

Start With Where It Is Going

On a shelf or a desk, 20 x 20 cm. In a group of two or three on a kitchen or hallway wall, 40 x 40 cm. Above a sideboard or a chest of drawers as the only thing on that wall, 60 x 60 cm. Over a bed or a fireplace where you want the wall to have a focal point, 80 x 80 cm.

Why Square Suits Phone Photos

Anything you cropped square for Instagram goes onto a square canvas untouched, which is not true of any other shape we sell. Put that same photo on a 3:2 canvas and you either lose the sides or end up with the subject off-centre.

Grouping Square Canvases

Squares group more easily than rectangles because there is no orientation to reconcile. Keep the gaps equal - 5 cm for 20 x 20 cm, around 10 cm for 40 x 40 cm - and hang the centre line of the whole group at about 145 cm from the floor rather than centring each canvas individually.

Watch the Resolution After Cropping

This is the one thing that catches people out with squares. Cropping a 4:3 photo to 1:1 throws away a quarter of it, and a 3:2 photo loses a third. Check the pixel dimensions of the cropped version, not the original - our uploader does this for you and flags anything that will not hold up.
