Note the unit difference: UK competitors sell squares in inches (4x4, 5x5, 6x6, 8x8, 10x10, 12x12), while ours are in centimetres. 10x10 cm is roughly a 4x4" print; 13x13 cm roughly 5x5"; 20x20 cm roughly 8x8". A "10x10" from another retailer may mean 10x10 inches — two and a half times the size of our 10x10 cm. Worth checking which unit a retailer means before comparing prices.

Where Square Photos Come From — and What to Expect

Instagram made the square famous, but it is much older: Hasselblad and Rolleiflex medium-format cameras shot 6x6 cm squares from the 1930s, and Polaroid's instant prints were square. The format never really went away.

One thing to know before you order. Your phone shoots 4:3, not square. Turning a 4:3 photo into a square means cutting about 25% off the long edge — the biggest crop of any print size. That is not a problem when it is deliberate, but it does mean:

Photos you already composed as squares print perfectly, with nothing lost
Ordinary 4:3 photos will lose a quarter of their width — centre-weighted subjects survive it well, wide landscapes and group shots do not
You control the crop — drag the crop box in the configurator and check the preview before ordering
Crop before you upload if you prefer — square-cropping in your phone's own photo editor gives you more control than doing it at checkout
