Alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which in a lot of British houses run between 90 cm and 110 cm wide - leaving room for a 75 cm canvas and not much else. Also the wall between a door and a corner, and the panel above a half-landing window.

Measuring an Alcove Properly

Measure at the top and at skirting height, because plasterwork in older houses is rarely parallel. Take the narrower figure, subtract 15 cm from each side, and buy to that. A canvas that touches the returns of an alcove looks like a mistake even when the fit is technically perfect.
