10x8" is the classic portrait and framing size — the one school photographers, wedding photographers and picture framers have used for decades. It is big enough to be the only thing on a shelf, and it fits the most widely stocked large frame in the UK.

At MY PICTURE a 10x8 print is 20x25 cm, on premium professional photo paper with 12-colour printing.

Every size and finish we print sits on the main photo prints page if you want to compare before you order.

The Traditional Portrait Format

  • About 3.3 times the area of a 6x4, and a little over twice a 7x5
  • 5:4 shape — squarer than any camera shoots, which flatters portraits
  • Matte for framing behind glass, gloss for maximum colour
  • Fits 10x8" frames and mounts, widely stocked in the UK
  • Variable formats available if you would rather not crop at all

What Size Is a 10x8 Photo Print?

Unit Measurement
Inches 10 × 8"
Centimetres 25.4 × 20.3 cm (printed as 20x25 cm)
Millimetres 254 × 203 mm
Pixels at 300 DPI 2953 × 2362 px
Pixels at 200 DPI 1969 × 1575 px
Aspect ratio 5:4 (1.25)

10x8 and 8x10 are the same print — 10x8 describes it landscape, 8x10 portrait. UK retailers write 10x8, US ones 8x10.

For scale, a 10x8 is about 3.3 times the area of a 6x4 and a little over twice a 7x5.

Is 10x8 the Same as A4?

No, and it is the most common question about this size — so worth being precise.

Size Dimensions Shape
10x8" 25.4 × 20.3 cm 1.25 (5:4)
A4 29.7 × 21 cm 1.41

A4 is 4 cm longer and a noticeably narrower shape. A 10x8 print will not fill an A4 frame or mount — it will sit inside it with an uneven margin. They get confused because both are "the big one" in most people's minds, but they are different sizes for different things: 10x8 is a photographic format, A4 is a paper format.

If you want a print for an A4 frame, use a poster print in A4. If you want a photographic print at roughly that scale, 10x8 or 20x30 cm are the right choices.

Will a 10x8 Crop My Photo?

A little. 10x8 is 5:4, which is slightly squarer than any camera shoots.

Your camera shoots Cropped to fill a 10x8
4:3 (most phones, compacts) About 6% off the width
3:2 (most DSLRs, mirrorless) About 17% off the width

That 17% matters if you shoot on a proper camera — it is a real slice off both sides, and on a group shot it can lose someone. Two ways round it:

  • Check the crop before you order — drag the crop box so the important part of the frame survives
  • Use a variable format instead — pick a fixed dimension of 20 cm and we set the other side from your image's own ratio, so nothing is cropped

10x8's squarer shape is also exactly why portrait photographers like it: it crops in towards the subject, which flatters a head-and-shoulders shot.

Will a 10x8 Print Look Sharp?

A 10x8 needs 2362 × 2953 pixels — about 7 megapixels — for a full 300 DPI print. A 12 MP phone photo clears it, but the 6% crop eats into that, so there is less headroom than at smaller sizes.

Be careful with heavily cropped photos, digital zoom, screenshots and anything downloaded from social media — all of them can land under the mark at this size. Upload the original file from your camera roll, and our uploader will warn you if it will not hold.

How Much Do 10x8 Prints Cost?

From £0.44 per print — the lowest price for a 10x8 in the UK.

Quantity Approx. total
20 prints (our minimum) £8.80
50 prints £22.00
100 prints £44.00

How the UK market compares — cheapest advertised per-print price, checked 7 September 2026:

Retailer From
MY PICTURE £0.44
FreeSnaps £0.50
Snapfish £0.56
DS Colour Labs £1.00
Boots Photo £1.25
CEWE £1.25
PostSnap £2.00
Photo Zone £2.00
ASDA Photo £4.50
Max Spielmann £4.50

A ninefold spread on the same size. 10x8 is priced as a premium "enlargement" almost everywhere, which is why it is worth comparing per-print rather than assuming the high street is competitive.

Matte or Gloss for a 10x8?

Same premium paper, same 12-colour inks, different surface coating.

Attribute Matte finish Gloss finish
Surface Soft, non-reflective Smooth, reflective
Colour Softer, more natural Punchier, deeper contrast
Fingerprints Hides them Shows them
Under glass No glare Can catch glare
Best for Framing, portraits, black and white Albums, travel, colour-rich shots
Price Same as gloss Same as matte

Most 10x8 prints end up framed, which points towards matte — a print this size shows glare across its whole surface under glass.

What People Print at 10x8

  • Portraits — the traditional portrait size, and the shape that flatters a head-and-shoulders shot
  • School and team photos — what school photographers have supplied for generations
  • Framing — one of the most widely stocked large frame and mount sizes in the UK
  • Wedding and christening prints — the size couples frame and give to family
  • Certificates and mounted displays — sits well inside a mount with a generous border
  • Pet portraits — big enough for detail in fur and eyes without going to wall size

10x8 Photo Prints — FAQs

What is the size of a 10x8 photo print?

10 × 8 inches, which is 25.4 × 20.3 cm or 254 × 203 mm. We print it as 20x25 cm. Its 5:4 aspect ratio is slightly squarer than any camera shoots, so a small crop applies.

Is 10x8 an A4?

No. A4 is 29.7 × 21 cm — 4 cm longer than a 10x8 and a narrower shape. A 10x8 print will not fill an A4 frame or mount. For an A4 frame, use a poster print in A4 instead.

What is 10x8 in cm?

25.4 × 20.3 cm. We print it as 20x25 cm — about 4 mm short of a true 10x8, the same tolerance the industry uses when it sells 10x15 cm as a 6x4. It fits 10x8" frames.

Is a 10x8 the same as an 8x10?

Yes — same print, different orientation. 10x8 is landscape, 8x10 is portrait. UK retailers write 10x8, US retailers 8x10.

Where can I get cheap 10x8 photo prints?

Order online in a batch rather than at a high-street counter. UK 10x8 prices run from about £0.50 to £4.50 for the same size — supermarket and click-and-collect services sit at the expensive end because you are paying for the speed.

Why are 10x8 prints so expensive?

Mostly because they are priced as a premium product rather than by what they cost to make. A 10x8 uses roughly three times the paper of a 6x4, but many retailers charge twenty to forty times as much. It is handled individually rather than run in a continuous batch, which is a real cost — just not that much of one.

Where can I print high quality 10x8 photos?

Look for two things: professional photographic paper, and how many ink colours the lab prints in. We use premium photo paper and 12-colour printing, where most services use four or six — the difference shows in skin tones and shadow detail, which is exactly what a portrait at this size exposes.

How many megapixels do I need for a 10x8 print?

About 7 MP for a full 300 DPI print (2362 × 2953 pixels). A 12 MP phone photo clears it, though the crop to 5:4 eats into that. Screenshots and social-media downloads will not hold at this size — we flag them before you order.

Does a 10x8 print crop my photo?

Yes, a little. About 6% off the width of a 4:3 phone photo, or about 17% from a 3:2 camera photo, because 10x8 is squarer than either. You will see the crop before ordering and can adjust it — or use a variable format, where the print adapts to your image and nothing is cropped.
