Printing A4 Photos for a Frame

An A4 frame's back board is 21×29.7 cm. A 20×30 cm print covers it except for 5 mm down each long side, and the extra 3 mm of length disappears under the frame's rebate — so with a mount nothing shows, and without one you will see a thin strip of backing at each side. If the frame has a mount with an A4-sized window, the 20×27 cm print sits behind it with room to spare. Check the crop in the preview before you order, because a 4:3 phone photo and a 3:2 camera photo crop differently at this size.

It fits an A4 frame

At 1 cm narrower and 3 mm longer than A4, the print sits inside a standard A4 frame with a slim mount and nothing showing. It is the closest any fixed photo size gets.

Can I print just one A4-size photo?

Photo prints have a minimum order of 20. For a single A4-size picture, order a 30×20 cm poster print from £3 instead — the same footprint as the 20×30 cm photo print, printed on matte poster paper.

What resolution do I need for an A4-size photo print?

For a sharp 20×30 cm print, a file of about 2,400×3,500 pixels (8 megapixels) is ideal, which any recent phone produces. The editor warns you if a photo is too small for the size you choose.

A-Sizes and Photo Sizes Are Different Systems

Why photo prints are not sold in A sizes

A sizes are a paper standard, each one half the size of the one before. Photo print sizes follow camera and phone ratios — 3:2 and 4:3 — so a photo fills them without being cropped.

What that means in practice

20×30 cm is 2:3, which is exactly the shape of a photo from most cameras, while most phones shoot 4:3. A4 sits between the two, so an A4-shaped print would crop a little off nearly every photo.

If you need the A4 footprint exactly

Order a 30×20 cm poster instead. It has the same footprint as the 20×30 cm photo print, there is no minimum order, and it is printed on matte poster paper rather than photo paper.

And for A3

The 40×30 cm poster is the nearest size, at £4. A3 is 29.7×42 cm, so the poster is a little wider and a little shorter.
